5 Ways to Prepare for a Successful Brand Photo Shoot

A brand photoshoot serves as more than just a collection of pretty pictures—it's an opportunity to visually convey your brand's essence, values, and personality. Preparing for a brand photoshoot can elevate your online presence and create an authentic connection with your audience.

Here are five simple ways to ensure you're ready to shine in front of the camera:

1. Find Inspiration

Before stepping in front of the lens, take the time to clarify your brand story and vision. What sets you apart from others in your field? What values and beliefs do you embody through your service? By defining your brand narrative, you'll have a clear roadmap for communicating your essence during the photoshoot.

Create a Pinterest mood board or visual collage on that reflects the aesthetic and vibe you want to convey. Type “brand photography inspiration” or some variation into the search bar, and you’ll see tons of inspiration. Pin anything that you feel drawn to, and sort through it later. You’ll start to see your vision emerge and the style you want to convey through your brand photography.

2. Determine Goals + Shot List

In order to get the most out of you investment, it’s helpful to outline your goals and shot list for your photoshoot.

Are you establishing your visual aesthetic for your website launch or rebrand? Do you need imagery to help promote an upcoming brand partnership? Are you launching new products/services/courses etc? What marketing channels will you be utilizing and what style of brand photos do you want for each?

It can be helpful to ask your photographer for some layout varieties such as negative space on the left, on the right, and on top so you can ensure you have the style you need for a variety of different applications.

Here are some ideas to consider for you shot list:

  • Professional or everywhere headshots

  • Your office space or work setting

  • Lifestyle photos of you in your work space

  • Mock client session (virtual or in person)

  • Behind the scenes lifestyle photos - share a day in the life in your business, your daily routine or you speaking at an event

  • Your business processes or tools

  • A celebration shot for a big launch or a fun portrait

  • Anything that relates to your personal likes (ie. props from home) - your favorite coffee mug, teacup or water bottle, flowers or plants, a hobby, your favorite pair of shoes, etc

Establish this beforehand, so you can create images that are super targeted to your goals.

3. Find the Right Photographer

Look for a photographer whose work fits with your style, and helps you feel confident and comfortable. Try searching “[City] Brand Photographer” on Instagram, joining local photography Facebook groups and posting about what I’m looking for, or asking for recommendations from people in your community.

If you’re looking for someone to shoot light and airy, don’t hire the dark & moody photographer. Photographers specialize in certain styles for a reason, so if their IG page or portfolio doesn’t match the vibe you’re looking for, keep looking.

Once you have a photographer, be sure to clearly articulate your goals, preferences and expectations so that you can walk away with photos that support your vision.

Be sure to share your mood board or examples of images or styles that resonate with you, and discuss any specific shots or poses you’d like to capture.

Collaborate closely with your photographer to brainstorm ideas and explore creative possibilities. Remember, the photoshoot is a collaborative effort aimed at showcasing the best of your brand.

4. Select Location + Props

The backdrop of your photoshoot sets the stage for storytelling and visual narrative. Select locations that resonate with your brand's aesthetic and messaging. Whether it's a cozy coffee shop, a serene park, or the comfort of your own workspace, choose settings that reflect the essence of your service.

You may even want to look into rental options through sites like Peerspace that can help you find a nice space to rent for a few hours. I’ve also heard of people using an AirBNB for this purpose as well. I know budget can be a big factor, but a photographer cannot photoshop a bad setting, and it’s worth your investment to make sure your location matches your vision for your brand and your brand photos.

Consider incorporating props or elements that enhance the storytelling aspect of your brand. From books and journals to meaningful objects related to your work, every detail adds depth to your visual story.

5. Plan Your Looks

Your wardrobe choices play a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of your brand. Opt for outfits that align with your brand's tone and resonate with your target audience. Choose colors, textures, and styles that reflect your personality and profession. Consider how your wardrobe will complement the settings and backgrounds chosen for the photoshoot, as well as with your brand. Aim for a cohesive look that exudes professionalism and authenticity.

On the day of the photoshoot, approach the experience with mindful presence and authenticity. Relax, breathe, and trust in the process. Embrace your unique essence and let your genuine personality shine through each frame. Avoid forcing poses or expressions and instead focus on being present in the moment. Authenticity is magnetic and resonates deeply with your audience. Allow your true self to emerge organically, and let the camera capture the essence of your brand with grace and authenticity.

A few other considerations:

  • Bring your favorite music to play to help you loosen up.

  • Be vulnerable with your photographer! Tell them about any insecurities you may have, so they can help you feel your best in the photos they produce. They are professionals for a reason.

  • Don’t wait to plan! This all takes careful consideration and time to make your vision come to life.
